Why are faces blurred or shaded?

Initially the faces of not in fact blurred. We became aware, however, that student participants were being influenced by the person's appearance. In a few de-briefings there were comments like: But she looked so kind and sincere.

There is considerable research (in for example legal research) about how appearance and demeanour can influence a juror's deliberations. For example, in court settings a defendant or witness may appear to be more or less trustworthy based on their appearance and their clothing.
